Government Correspondence and Compliance

At the IPTF, we are engaging proactively with government at the highest levels, most recently through open letters outlining practical recommendations to support welfare reform. Alongside this policy work, we continue to champion strong industry compliance and uphold Consumer Duty to ensure better outcomes for consumers.

Government Correspondence

Through our open letters, we present clear and actionable recommendations to government on how the protection industry can better complement welfare provision. These letters reflect our belief that open dialogue and partnership are essential for building stronger, more responsive safety nets that support the long-term wellbeing of the UK’s workforce.

Letter to the Secretary of State for Business & Trade – Peter Kyle MP

We urge the Government to expand income protection access for self-employed workers and small business owners, a group that often lacks financial safety nets. This letter highlights the economic risks faced by this growing sector and showcases the success of initiatives like the 7 Families project. We seek to collaborate with the Department for Business and Trade to support the Make Work Pay strategy and strengthen national financial resilience.

Letter to HM Treasury – Patrick Leavey

In this letter, we highlight the absence of adequate income protection for small business owners and the self-employed groups often excluded from workplace benefits and universal credit support. Drawing on campaign successes like 7 Families, we propose working with Treasury officials to improve awareness, guidance and access to protection as part of the wider Keep Britain Working agenda.

Letter to the City Minister – Emma Reynolds MP

We raised concerns about the financial vulnerability of self-employed workers and small company directors, highlighting the lack of employer-provided benefits available to them. This letter discusses the value of collaborative, industry-wide campaigns and proposes joint work with the Treasury to enhance awareness, access and financial resilience as part of national employment objectives

Letter to Lucy Rigby KC MP – Economic Secretary to the Treasury

Welcoming the Government’s Financial Inclusion Strategy, we reflect on the importance of income protection in building resilient households and supporting people back to work. Our letter emphasises ongoing IPTF engagement across government departments and asks to collaborate with Treasury officials to ensure income protection is accessible, practical and understood by all households, including the self-employed.

Letter to the Prime Minister – Sir Keir Starmer MP

Responding to welfare reform announcements, we outlined how the protection insurance industry can reduce long-term welfare dependency by supporting people back to work through vocational rehabilitation and early intervention services. The letter calls for a welfare system that rewards personal responsibility and ensures income protection policyholders are not penalised. We invites collaboration with government to build a fairer and financially resilient UK.
